Declaration of the Unconditional Value of Dogs
I recognise that every dog has intrinsic value. Their value does not depend on their health, temperament, behaviour, usefulness or how easy they are for people to live with.
A dog has needs, interests and preferences of their own. Meeting their needs and respecting their interests and preferences must not be a reward for obedience or for meeting human expectations.
Anyone responsible for a dog has a duty to provide for their wellbeing: a life free from fear and pain, fulfilment of their needs, and opportunities to enjoy a life of their own.
A dog needs opportunities to make choices, take initiative and influence what happens. Respecting a dog means taking their preferences and signals of agreement or refusal into account and changing our actions in response.
Behaviour that people find inconvenient does not justify causing a dog pain or fear. Difficulties in life together, everyday care and medical treatment must all be addressed in ways that protect the dog from suffering.
Dogs’ interests matter in their own right and must be considered both in individual care and in decisions made across society.
By signing this declaration, I support these principles and commit to following them whenever my actions affect dogs’ lives.
